Stress!

Guess who managed to sleep through two alarms and now has to rush across London?

Sigh. And I'm still tired enough to feel nauseated.
baratron: (grinning)
I really shouldn't laugh at people whose English is a damn sight better than my Mandarin or Cantonese, but there's something endearingly hilarious about this sign for "herbal Viagra" as seen in a Chinese Traditional Medicine shop:

Make your another half more happier.

For one thing, it's unintentionally poly...

I wish my husband would stop setting his alarm for 9.30am when he has been up working until 4am & has no intention of leaving for work until 11.30 at the earliest. All it does is wake me up, & enough that I can't readily fall back to sleep. If you wake my belly up, then you wake the rest of me as well. My belly is busy shouting "HUNGRY!" at me & I am trying to placate it with ginger nuts & chocolate milk, but I feel awful from lack of sleep.

Oh yes. And then he has the nerve to snore at me! ARRGH!

Argh

I forgot it was half-term, and now I'm on the train next to a ridiculously high-pitched shrieking small child. It's making no attempt to moderate its volume or pitch, and all its attached adult is doing is telling it off and sighing, rather than explaining how to behave :/
I'd move if I could, but I can't because the aisles aren't wide enough.

I am having a horrible, no good, shitty day.

Woke up after 8 hours of sleep, but was still so tired that I almost put my phone & train ticket in the bin instead of my used paper cup.

Went to College. Dealt with a series of idiots. You see, I discovered at the end of last term that my Library account expired on 30th November. The Library's records claimed I was a "dormant student, not in contact with the College", which is interesting considering that I have completed Enrollment and paid fees!

It is sorted now, but only *after* some twat in Birkbeck admin managed to fuck things up worse than they already were. At one point, not only did the computer think I wasn't enrolled, but it also thought I owed money for the two terms last year when I was on a leave of absence! And it wanted me to produce £314 out of thin air!!

Stressed beyond belief. Funny, that. Was ready to kill someone, possibly myself. Not even joking. I don't know if it's "normal" to get so stressed by minor administrative cock-ups, but I have an anxiety disorder plus another disorder which makes my body produce too much adrenaline, and I just didn't bloody need some twonk trying to fix the problem and making everything worse! Nor accusing me of not enrolling on time! (How would the College have known where to take direct debits from if I hadn't enrolled?!)

Then I tried to go to Camden. Discovered the bus was on diversion because Upper Woburn Place is being dug up, but half the stops didn't have any explanation of the diverted route. Eventually found a 168 stop at bloody Holborn - so far south that I'd have been better off walking to Euston. The worst thing is, I even knew about this diversion. I'd just forgotten.

Eeep.

Help! What's the etiquette for meeting someone at a professional event that you last saw when you were running a workshop about polyamory together? Especially if you didn't previously know you were in the same professional field?

baratron: (goggles)

No, woman with a pushchair and no baby in sight, you DON'T get to make me feel guilty for being in the Priority Wheelchair Space. "That thing" is already as pushed over as it goes,
and I'm well within the blue lines. It's not my fault if your pushchair doesn't fold.

baratron: (angry)

Today my life is a fucking disaster & I want to stab everyone in the head. I was supposed to be attending a lecture on research very similar to what I'm doing, at UCL, at 1pm.

Woke up at 9.50am with Richard's alarm. Couldn't go back to sleep. Got up & had a Proper Breakfast (!). Arrived at Kingston station just in time to miss the 11:34 train - could have caught it if I didn't need the bloody ramp to get onto the train :/ Got the 11:49 okay. Arrived at Waterloo at 12:15, so far making very good progress. It's normally no more than 15 minutes from Waterloo to UCL by taxi... Sat in the taxi queue for 45 minutes. Got in the taxi just after 1pm. Arrived at UCL at 1.50 pm. All because of the student & anti-cuts demonstrations that I didn't know were happening today, which blocked up the roads for people like me too crippled to use the bloody Tube.

Didn't even attempt to get to the last 10 minutes of the lecture. Lurked outside to apologise to Philip & the person running it & the speaker. That took a huge amount of courage & I'm really quite shaky now. Want to do nothing more than crawl home & back into bed, but seeing as it cost me £26 (!) to get in, I might as well stay here. Guess I'm having a protein bar, "fruit flakes" (TM) & ginger biscuits for lunch, since I only have £1.88 left in my purse. Unless Richard happens to have no work to do (lol!) & can come up with food...

I "should" have just gone into London as soon as I got up - but I didn't bloody know I needed to. Really annoyed that I didn't check the internet news when I woke up - but I didn't know I needed to. I even generally support the demonstrations taking place. It's just that I wish I'd known they were happening e.g. last night before I went to bed, because now I'm fucking tired & stressed & grumpy & hungry & headachy, & didn't make it to the lecture I was supposed to be at, & would quite like to fall over and die, thank you very much.

Edit: Day has only improved... Headache didn't go away, so didn't dare go into the lab because solvents. The bus driver on the way back failed to see that I existed despite me pressing the "disabled" button to get off, and a total stranger decided to fall over me at Waterloo station because she wasn't looking. Ready to fall over dead now.

Philip & I leaving the postgraduate lab on Friday to "borrow" ice from the undergrad lab:

"Don't wear your gloves outside the lab."
"Oh!" *takes them off* "Er... why not?"
"Well, partly because you don't want to get whatever's on your gloves on door handles that people are going to touch with bare hands."
"Ah. That makes sense."
"Also because it freaks people out."
"Oh." *sadly* "I always thought that freaking people out was the fun part of being a scientist."

I'm at BiCon, and so are my allergies! Woke up 4 times in the night wheezing & feel like death. I blame the one, very thin pillow, which is still too low even after having some clothes shoved under it, & too smelly despite having been double-wrapped in a spare pillowcase I brought from home. I also blame the duvet of doom which must contain all the dustmites in the world, and the ridiculously thin sheet separating me from the mattress & who knows how many years' worth of student secretions?

Currently trying to decide whether to get up for the 11.30am session or go back to bed until the 2.30pm slot, & whether I'm going to the accommodation office here to see if they can give me another pillow, or just into town to BUY a new, clean one!

My poor lungs. My poor itchy eyes. My poor sinuses & itchy nose :(
baratron: (boots)

So is anyone else arriving at Bradford station around 4.30pm tomorrow & want to either share a cab, or negotiate buses together?

baratron: (bunches)

At King's College Union waiting for the Adrenaline Mob gig to start. We met them earlier & Mike Portnoy "edited" Paploo the Ewok's t-shirt so it now reads "M is for Metal + Mike"! He was really funny & talked more than the rest of the band put together, and we got "everything" signed - CD, DVD, posters...

Photos later.

Yesterday was busy & chaotic. Long! Features Ginger, Trivium, Steel Panther, The Quireboys, Killswitch Engage & Metallica, also a few other bands. And mud. Lots of mud. )

We're at the Download Festival. Weather here has been awful. Can't believe it's supposed to be June - 10 deg C, rain, & a massive wind chill factor, especially up on the disabled viewing platforms.

Yesterday we saw:
* Terrorvision - they seemed to put on a good show but the sound was beyond terrible.

* Little Angels - absolutely bloody brilliant. Sound was amazing & they seemed far more coherent than seems fair for a band who've been split up for 18 years. I'm going to go out & rebuy their first album, which I haven't seen in 16 years, & buy for the first time their other two albums.

*  Opeth - they were better than I thought they'd be. I enjoyed them, despite the vocalist's tendency to scream rather than sing.

We did NOT see Europe because they cancelled 20 minutes after they were supposed to be on stage! Apparently delayed by "bad weather". We also missed Nightwish or Slash because I was freezing my arse off and worried that I was going to get ill. After we got back to the hotel, I had a hot meal of proper food and got into bed, and it was still 10pm before I was warm enough.

Today I have come armed with twice as many clothes as I had yesterday. I have:
* leggings
* thick tracksuit trousers
* legwarmers
* winter lined boots
* a long-sleeved mesh top
* two t-shirts
* two long-sleeved t-shirts
* two hoodies
* gloves, hat & scarf
* a thick winter coat
* a huge orange waterproof poncho
plus underwear and socks.

I am hoping to stay warm even if I look like the Michelin Man!

Scary.

Holy crap, police with guns at Waterloo. And I don't mean little handguns like American police carry in holsters. These were big, fuck-off, two-handed RIFLES carried IN THEIR HANDS. Edit: I've been informed they were sub-machine guns. This is not an improvement.

Do Not Want. Especially Do Not Want every day between now & the end of the Olympics. I don't understand how people can feel safe when there are guns waving around.

...and this is even, or ESPECIALLY, after visiting a gun range in Florida last October & learning how to shoot. I was taught in my gun training to never point a gun at someone unless I intended to shoot them. But these policemen were standing at the top of an escalator. They were pointing the guns towards the floor at a 45 degree angle... so "unintentionally" aiming them at the people on the escalator.

Okay. My sleep "pattern" is now so firmly lodged in upside-down mode that I'm going to have to take Serious Action to fix it.

I am going to rush through a chronotherapy sleep reset cycle WAY faster than you're supposed to, because the other option is continuing to be non-functional. Yay.

So if you happen to phone, text, or email the address with my real name in it this week, please do so during the following times of day:
Today until 12 pm.
Wednesday midnight until 3pm.
Thursday 3am until 6pm.
Friday 6am until 9pm.

Times may be reorganized later in the week depending on how things go! Also, those of you who live outside the UK will have to convert this to your local time... so to avoid confusion, just use my "baratron" or "astra" email addresses, which don't make my phone beep!

And yes, I could set the options on my phone to turn off beeping on all emails and texts... but do you honestly think I'll remember that when I've been awake 15 hours and am dropping on my feet? When I'm overtired, I can barely manage coherent English, let alone thought...!

Look what happened in the middle of this thread!

Honestly, I could weep, but not for myself - I've had decades to get used to misogyny in geek venues. No - I'd be weeping for all the 14 year old girls on the forum who have to put up with constant dick & rape jokes (not least of all, people referring to "being raped" when they are killed in the game by an overpowered enemy), and then are told that their gender doesn't even matter.

Oh yes, and in case it isn't obvious - the last thing that'll help here is anyone I know registering a new account and rushing to my defense. I don't need defending from idiots!

Update

Have not been to the doctor - today was her day off, & I thought it was entirely pointless seeing someone else. The problem with doctors is that more than half of their notes are in their heads rather than on the computer, so I/we/another doctor can guess at her reasoning for changing the drug dose as much as we want - doesn't mean we'll be right.

I have spoken to the pharmacist, who's been making up my prescriptions for a decade, and he says that a month is long enough to be sure it's not working. So I will try to get an appointment tomorrow, which means being awake at 8.30am. *Properly* awake, since it'll either involve going there, or being held in a queue on the phone. Last month when I tried to call, I kept falling asleep while in the queue, which was no use for anything.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I was in plenty of time for my flight :) Given that it's me, this is An Achievement.

The flight, however, is not in time for me, so I've been sitting at the gate for 25 minutes. Yawn.
