That was really interesting to read. I think in some cases there is an element of occupying a certain role as a method of coping with something terrible. When you're sick it can help to occupy the "sick role" providing your friends and family go with the role. It can be quite supportive and helpful. Perhaps for serious illnesses of the life-threatening kind there is the "brave role" which serves the function of helping the person to actually feel less afraid because of the affirmation they get from others. Just a thought.
