Heh. I tried melatonin once. It's not available in the UK, so I had to wait until I was in the US for an alt.polycon, and buy some there. Let's just say I had an impressively bad reaction to it. Absolutely massive adrenaline surge, the kind that leaves you bouncing off the walls with stress - no way I could sleep after that.
My theory is that, because I can't do caffeine, in all the years that I had to sit up late doing school or college work, I developed some sort of weird biofeedback loop whereby as soon as I start feeling sleepy because of natural melatonin production, my body responds by producing adrenaline to keep me awake. There's a vague possibility that hypnosis would work to break this, although I still think that proper CBT done by someone with a clue would be enough.
