and in 30 years my hair will be...

Anyone care to place a bet on something we won't know the outcome of for 30 years?

Washed my hair tonight, and in doing noticed a very cool thing. One of the hairs that fell out was graduated in colour, from my usual very dark brown at one end, to white at the other. It was an even colour change through the strand.

Generally speaking black hair goes grey with age, and red hair goes white - blond can go white or just paler, while brown can go grey or white. I've always worried that my hair might be dark enough that it'll go grey, and for some reason I don't want to have grey hair. Not really sure why ;) My mum's hair is interesting, having gone from monochrome to multicolour (naturally) - she now has silver, blonde, brown and white hair, which is fantastic; but mine's likely too dark for anything like that to happen. The best I can hope for is salt-and-pepper. But finding this hair is cool, because it shows that my hair has the potential to go white rather than grey.

So anyone want to bet on what colour my hair will end up? :D

I bet that it'll end up whatever colour you like, because either you'll like whatever colour it ends up naturally, or by then they'll have developed hair colorant treatments that won't upset your allergies.

I think I may give my hair, which is beginning to silver quite prettily (my father, who's now in his mid-seventies, has only recently gone more silver than black) an electric blue dyejob this week for BiCon, because I really like the way the blue shines off the dark brown. Ideally I'd have a kind of mallard-feather effect, or the iridescent blue of Morpho butterflies, or maybe the burning flashes of a fire opal, but I don't know how I'd go about doing that.

How about henna? I've never known it be allergenic, and it produces such a pretty range of colours, no matter what the colour of the underlying hair is.

Only the first hair like that is cool. When you start finding more than one white hair (root to tip) in your hairbrush each day, it all starts to get a bit scary. That said, the coolest hair I've found was dark at the tip, white in the middle and almost back to dark again at the root. A tabby hair - very strange.

I'm glad that all my white hairs emanate from the same place (above my left temple), since I've now got a respectable "mad doctor" white streak. All I need now is the maniacal laugh and the lisping assistant, and I'll be made! Made, I say! Bwah-hah-hah-hah! (etc)

Your hair will go white.

Huh. I'd never heard that certain hair colors were more likely to go grey rather than white.
