So, I have done what every true spod does as soon as they've arrived at college: find out their login id, find the nearest computer room, log on. What can I say? ;)

I'm rather pleased that the computers here all have recent editions of IE, Netscape and Opera, so you have the choice. They even have StarOffice as well as MS Office! Cor. Shame about the NT, but there's no way round that these days.

I've discovered that Opera 7 for Windows does very strange things with my journal, so that gives me further incentive to learn my way round S2, and get rid of the horrible broken tables within tables within tables that is my S1 style. (Not my fault - blame Generator). Actually, I was doing fairly well setting up an S2 style on the LJ test server, before it fell over and refused to get back up. Might give it another prod tonight.

Right, I've got a lecture in 10 minutes so I'd better bog off. Oh, I do like this student lark ;)

... works fine here for your current journal style.

Opera 6.04 is what I have at home, and my journal looks the same in 6.04 as it does with IE 5, Netscapes 4.7 & 6.something, and Mozilla (recent, for Linux). That's why I'm so surprised that it's doing something different in 7.

Are you seeing an entire page of centre-aligned text? That's what 7 is doing to my lj - and it's freaky! It's supposed to be left aligned.

I'll post you a snapshot of how the screen looks later for me, looks fine here.

Also, all version of Opera 6 below 6.06 have a security bug that makes an attacker able to execute arbitrary code on your machine (it's a buffer overflow problem). I've seen an exploit for 6.05 and it worked. You should upgrade to 6.06b

This (http://monolith.dnsalias.org/~ishtar/lj/baratron_journal.gif) is what it looks like for me, anything wrong with it?

Beats the pants off my uni where it now takes about 15 - 20 mins just to log into NT4.... Fneh shitty network servers and lots of Novell Crud which is badly configured at a guess.

Still managed to sort FTP for LGB website and am currently in the nuke the nasty site and start again cos the current shouldn't (it does) render even in IE.

I use the LGB computer because I refuse to use the others in our dept or in libraries cos they are terrible, I have a Drs note citing ergonomics now which is nice (and true).

yay to Opera and Star Office tho. We're lucky to have MS Office and the joy of Pegasus for email (it has its own HTMLish format which bunks on anything else).

yay to studentship again, seems to be a trend.

I think I saw that before, but last time I checked Opera 6.06 was still in beta, and I don't use betas on principle. Of course now on the site they don't have anything except Opera 7, and I really don't want to have to pay for it again, even if I do get a discount for it being an upgrade... Hmmm. Yesterday Opera 7 was driving me nuts, but today I've discovered it has a rather nice feature that 6 doesn't have, so I might have to buy it... when I have some money.

Most old Opera version can be downloaded directly from the central FTP site. For 6.06 try the following directory: ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/606/en/ (ftp://ftp.opera.com//pub/opera/win/606/en/).

The with added Java (only needed if you want Java now and didn't have it before) is in the java/ directory and the one without in the std/ directory
