I am exhausted and hyper. I have been laughing non-stop for a couple of hours. My friends Tim and Peter were round and we were playing an extremely bizarre Japanese game [1], and I laughed so much I couldn't breathe. Now i feel very, very... different.

I think trying to get this feeling is the reason why people drink alcohol, except I don't get like this when I'm drunk. It takes me a couple of sips of something alcoholic to become light-headed and giddy - pleasantly drunk, then a couple more sips and I feel terrible - alcohol is a depressant, after all. I think I prefer getting drunk on surreality. But it's very odd :)

[1] Pop'n Music. It's a rhythm action game with large colourful buttons that you bash in time to perky J-pop music.

Good grief - where on earth did you manage to find Pop'n'Music?! I've never seen one of those yet! Is it like Keyboard Mania?!

Ah, I see from your userinfo that you're in London. Go to Computer Exchange! They have Pop'n Music 1, and 2 if you're lucky, for (Japanese) Dreamcast and Playstation for £24, although they tend not to have the controllers. That's where we got ours from. If you have the choice, get Pop'n Music 2, as it has all the songs from 1 on it, and it can be used to boot discs 3 and 4, whereas 1 can't.

[livejournal.com profile] meeping and his partner, and me & my bf have Pop'n Musics 1-5 between us (I have the even numbered ones and they have the odd-numbered ones :) ). Pop'n Music 1, 2 and 5 are stand-alone games, 3 and 4 are append discs that need either 2 or 5 to boot.

It's a truly fun game. I love it. (I wouldn't have spent over £100 on it if I didn't). Like Um Jammer Lammy, Guitar Freaks or Gitaroo Man, it plays music which you play along to, adding extra sounds if you press the buttons on time. I haven't seen Keyboardmania because it didn't appeal to me - too complicated with the real piano keyboard :)

Erm... if you're still not convinced by my description and can get to SW London, you can come round one Sunday when we have our Pop'n Party. Extra rhythm action fans are always appreciated. Drop me an email at my livejournal address if you're interested.

Ahhhh b-b-but then we have the problem that is a HUGE PAIN IN MY ARSE - that it won't play on a UK TV. My psx currently isn't chipped, but I found out that even if I do get it chipped, my TV won't be able to read the Japanese signal - and I am without resources to fix this by buying a spanking new TV :(

This is the reason why I try NOT to go to Cex, when I see all the lovely imports that I can't play, I'm far too tempted to emigrate to Japan!

So the only real game (bemani inspired!) that I have is DDR (and Parappa/Bust a Groove) and even THEN I only have the rubbish plastic mat that slips about all over the place and makes it impossible to do fast moves on. I hear a Dancing Stage Euromix 2 for psx is coming out at Christmas thought... *crosses fingers*... if so it might be worth me buying a decent solid pad. If I could play the Jap imports I would have totally got one ages ago :)

The controller to Pop'n'Music (from seeing a few stills) looks a bit like the controllers to Bishi Bashi in the arcades - is that right? The nearest arcade to my work now is a family type place - I feel so embarassed waiting behind a 6yr old to play these games but ah well...

Ah SW London, my old stomping ground... my postcode is still SW but far more central than the days of *urk* New Malden...! Where are you based?

Ah. You need a TV which does NTSC playback, and only the more expensive ones have that. However, most new TVs, even crappy 14" ones, have a SCART connector on the back. If you buy a Playstation RGB SCART lead, which costs about £5, you can see NTSC games in colour on any TV. (It's specifically an RGB SCART lead that you need rather than any old SCART lead). If that doesn't work, there are various colour mod cables & boxes you can get, which are still much cheaper than a new TV.

Getting the Playstation chipped is easy - if it's a grey PSX my boyfriend ([livejournal.com profile] wuzzie) can do it in about half an hour. He's pretty handy with a soldering iron and has done about a dozen of them for various friends. The chips cost about £5, and he normally charges a bit more for his time and effort. Shops charge from £20 upwards.

Er, well my flatmates PS2 I think is currently connected via some sort of SCART lead - no idea what type though. Are these RGB SCART leads easily avaliable?

My PSX is one of the older grey ones - pretty knackered now indeed and can be quite tempramental with second hand games. I fear my own hand with a soldering iron, although in my classes at high skool (me age 14) I didn't managed to blow anything up...

This actually now seems too easy! If it works you would not BELIEVE how much I would have to fall over and thank you!!!!

*tries to supress mounting excitement*
