I have found a recipe which has as its description: "Everyone knows the tops are the best part of the muffin! This recipe is for the tops only."

Um... how do you make muffin tops without making the rest of the muffin? And which American sitcom was it where the main characters made a huge batch of muffins, decided they only wanted to eat the tops, so donated their cut-off muffin bottoms or "stalks" to a homeless shelter - and the homeless people rejected them because they were muffin bottoms?

It was Elaine in Seinfeld

Note that the recipe specifies muffin-top pans - yes, they do exist. (There was actually a bakery for a while in this area that was called "Muffin Tops.")

I'm okay with whole muffins...but I was overwhelmed with joy when my girlfriend's husband found a way to make brownies with no edges.

No. The brownie in the middle with no edges at all is the best one. If I make a pan of brownies, I declare that one to be mine.

Makes perfect sense to me. The pans look like the kind of thing I might use to make Yorkshire puddings, fwiw.

Huh, yeah... so you mean I could have made this recipe last night after all?! I have multiple Yorkshire pudding tins, they're an essential part of my life ;)

I did actually want a real answer, btw. I was trying to work out whether the ingredients in a "muffin top only" recipe would be different to those in a muffin recipe - because you want the cake to grow in a diffferent way - but I couldn't make sense of many of the recipes because they were just too American. (I can convert from cups to grams at least now - but a lot of other terms are completely unfamiliar). Some friends on irc last night were trying to explain what is meant by "white" and "yellow" cake, because a lot of the muffin recipes started with "Take a packet of yellow cake mix", but I felt like I was bashing my head against the wall, even after I had a mental Venn diagram showing sponge cake, white cake and yellow cake.

I must say, I'm somewhat bemused by a recipe that involves a cake mix full stop - if you're making a cake from a recipe, doesn't that mean you make it from scratch? The whole point of cake mix is you just bung an egg in and put it in the oven. At least when I used to buy cake mixes, cake mix cakes were nothing like real cakes... Next thing you'll know, someone will be suggesting I should use processed "cheese" to make macaroni cheese... ;)

Cake mix is actually a good base for other cakes and things-I've got a whole cookbook dedicated to doctored cake mixes, and a couple of other recipes of my own.

Hmm. It's just that most heavily processed foods are a bit nightmarish when you have food allergies/intolerances. Vegan cake mix exists, as does allergy-free cake mix, but they are terribly expensive. Also, I am not a big fan of wheat-free or gluten-free stuff, and don't see the point of spending more money on a cake mix than it would cost to buy the ingredients and make it myself.
