You know what I really hate? Dreaming about foodstuffs that do not yet exist. Last night I had a fantastic dream about vegan bacon that actually had the texture of real bacon, without a list of E numbers as long as my arm. (Vegetarian "bacon" currently available tastes like salty cardboard and has a million and one artificial additives). Then I woke up. A few weeks ago, I dreamt about going to an ice cream parlour, desperately wanting a milkshake, and I was told "it's okay, all the ice creams here are soya or oat"...

Grrrr!

I was thinking about Morningstar Streaky Strips, actually. The fake bacon that is dyed randomly yellow and red to give the appearance of real bacon (despite the fact the yellow and red bits are identical in composition!).

I remember one morning when I'd just got together with Richard and we'd been out to Slimelight for the night, microwaving and eating an entire packet of them. Eurgh. I don't think I've had them since...

FWIW, the kosher shops I've had soy bacon at seem to do a better job than most commercial preparations for vegeterians. If you have a Kosher shop near you, you might have better luck.

I think in the Jewish parts of London they have "Kosher beef bacon". Which isn't much use for me...

Tivall make Kosher food that is also vegetarian, but if they do bacon, the shops near me don't have it. Hmmm. I should look for a catalogue, or try Golders Green some time. Presumably not on a Saturday, though.

I'd agree-Saturday might not be the best time to check out the Kosher shops.

Dear ghod. They're available here, too - and just as awful. (I liked their sausage links, though, when I was still eating veg.)

I've been eating absolutely gorgeous vegan bacon which has about three ingredients (soya beans, salt, water and maybe one other ingredient) since 1998. They're essentially halved soya beans compressed together into strips and then treated with the same salting process used in bacon. I bought them from Canterbury Wholefoods, haven't found an equivalent place in Notts yet. They fry wonderfully and make a very nice butty when combined with ketchup or brown sauce.

I'm not really a fan of fake meat but this was obviously flavoured simply by natural process (similarly smoked tofu) that I couldn't fault it.
