I have been having a completely insane week. Working 8, 10 and 12 hour days, running from one end of London to the other, and teaching A2 chemistry at 9.30am. Argh. My brain doesn't even come online until after lunch...

So I have had absolutely no time for lj and have no idea what anyone is up to. Also, trying to catch up with my friends list is impossible because every single entry on my friends page looks like this:

[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<font="verdana">') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

<table width="95%" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" border="0" summary=""> <tr> <td bgcolor="#efcfff" align="center"> <table width="100%" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" border="0" summary=""> <tr> <td> <table width="100%" cellpadding="2" border="0"> <tr> <td class="caption">WTF?!</td> <td align="right" class="index">[ 29 Oct 2004 | 08:16am ]</td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2" bgcolor="#Feffbb"> <table cellpadding="1" border="0" summary=""> <tr> <td width="104" align="center" valign="top" bgcolor="#ffffff"> <a class="index" href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/epi_lj/">
<font color="#000000">epi_lj</font></a> </td> <td valign="top"> <table width="100%" cellpadding="2" border="0"> <tr> <td> <font="Verdana" size="1"> ( Image advertising some alarming cat products behind the cut. )

Okay, product content aside, is it just me or is that cat seriously photoshopped in? </font> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> [ 1 comment |post comment ] </table> </td> </tr> </table><p>

I take it lj's finally got round to starting to complain about non-compliant HTML in LJ styles (hardly my fault, as S1 Generator uses about a billion nested tables, and my kludgey version only uses a hundred), which should give me the incentive to get off my arse and finish my S2 style, only that would take effort... hrm. And we are going on holiday tomorrow. Ish.

(capitals for emphasis, square brackets cos I'm lazy and can't be bothered to encode).

But
[span style="font family:verdana"]stuff[/span]
or
table cell stuff

are more up-to-date ways of doing it.

Why has it only just started breaking, though? My S1 style hasn't exactly changed in the last 2 1/2 years.

...and according to the source code, it's doing
td {
font-family: verdana, sans-serif;
font-size: 10pt;
}

which is the same as it always has. hrm.

That bit of CSS code is fine. But in addition to that, there's also a bunch of font tags, including the <font="verdana"> immediately before the entry text within the nested table which is causing the problem.

Have a good trip. Will have to meet up when you're back and deliver these things from Japan.

Yes, I can see that - but I can't find it to correct it in my LJ style. I've searched, and the code I quoted is the only reference to "verdana" in the entire block. Remember, S1 styles aren't stylesheets - LJ itself adds a load of extra crap when it renders the page. This must be what's happening. Maybe LJ has decided to switch _everything_ from HTML to XML, or something.

Ah, ok. I have no clue then. I only ever fiddled with overrides in S1. I've just been fiddling with S2 and switched over to it, but I didn't really do more than a copy and paste and editing a few lines.
