I, sort of, disagree. It is okay for you to be terrified "because you are a Unique Individual", but only in facing the fear and being brave do you redeem yourself.
However, I assume (Um, that's the way I'm reading it, not trying to put words in your mouth) your lack of comfort is in the usage of the phrase when "hysterical woman draws attention away from man bleeding to death because she can't cope with the sight of blood" -type where I would certainly agree it's a cop-out. Rather than the sense of "being stuck full of needles even though I hate them because it's necessary". Because it is okay for you to be terrified - as you pointed out.
