Richard and H-L in Nu Metal shocker!
Aug. 21st, 2001 04:05 amAs some of you know, I'm not really into popular music. The only CD I have that was released this year is the newest Izzy Stradlin effort, "River". OK, he was in Guns N'Roses a long time ago, but his solo albums have all been laid-back blues rock, released with no advertising at all - hardly the sort of thing that is fashionable! I have only 5 albums dated 2000 (Blur - "The Best Of", Elastica - "The Menace", Grand Theft Audio - "Blame Everyone", Silver Ginger 5 - "Black Leather Mojo" and The Yo-Yos - "Uppers and Downers"), and only one of those could be described as a chart record. The majority of CDs I have were released between 1990 and 1997. Richard's usual choice of listening material is even older - most of the albums in his collection were originally released on vinyl, many before he was even born.
So I was somewhat surprised when he came home the other day with the Blink-182 album. Having previously laughed at people who like this sort of modern punk stuff (they're mostly all 14), I was even more surprised to discover that I like the album. Does this mean that my goth credentials will be taken away?

music credibility
I think it's good that you have more than one type of music in your collection.
My family grew up hearing all kinds of stuff on the radio/records played at home, and I think it's made me appreciate all kinds of music. ;-)
It doesn't matter if your friends don't like all of your music (as long as YOU enjoy it, that's what counts).

The single will be released as a promotional CD available with every Happy Meal you buy at McDonalds and will soon go multi-platinum in 43 nations and American Samoa. This will begin Spears descent into Heroin Chic Rock and an abortive lesbian love affair as Courtney Love's collared slave, culminating in her Grammy-award winning talking blues double-album "Fuck the Mouse and the bitch who rode me."
Meanwhile Peter Murphy will revive Bauhaus with the improbable addition of christian rocker Amy Grant and newgrass artists The Dixie Chicks. Murphy will admit later that he did it on a lark just to see if "he could do something so insanely wrong that no one would ever think listen to it." Sadly, record sales numbering in the trillions prove that underestimating popular music tastes is actually impossible. In a related note, string ties and black-on-black cowboy boots become part of the de rigeur goth ensemble.

Date: 2001-08-22 05:01 am (UTC)Are the Izzy Stradlin albums any good? I've heard some of Slash's recent stuff but hadn't heard of Stradlin releasing any records.
I've only bought 4 CDs in the last year and only 2 of those were modern (Placebo are excellent, probably your kind of thing)
