There was some kind of explosion around 6am. I thought it was our boiler going insane, or something really loud falling over in the house. Richard was out walking, and he came back shaken. We're watching BBC News 24 to try to find out what it was. Reports say it might be a fuel depot at Hemel Hempstead by junction 8 of the M1 - that's more than 40 miles away! People have heard it as far south as Ascot & Guildford.

We're fine, but Richard is all shaken up.

imma sit here in shock now. Just looked it up on a map. It's, like, 2 miles from my house.

BBC News 24 is just wittering inanely about how there's been an explosion, or 2-3, and we don't know why or how, just that this Buncefeld Oil Depot is all on fire.

In lieu of any actual news they're just interviewing random people about the size of the flames, in the hope that someone will pop up and explain what actually happened.

This is scary stuff. It's already on fark and people are already busting out the "t" word as a possible cause. Hoping this was just an accident and casualties are as minimal as possible given the scale of the event.

I happened to wander into the living room, where my husband had fallen asleep with CNN on, and they were reporting it as an accident.

Wikipedia news is saying that the reason people heard the explosion from so far away was some kind of inversion layer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inversion_layer .

Scary stuff...

One of my other LJ friends apparently works like 10 minutes from where it happened.

This proves how sound proof my house is. I'm not that far from you in terms of the distance we're talking about but I didn't hear the exsplotion in my house. I do know when it happened I was in the bath but my head was above water because the bathroom door opened for no reason. Maybe the soundproofing took out the audiable frequencys but left the shock wave to pass through and open my door. Puzzled me somwhat at the time untill I heard about the exsplotion.
