Observation

I have come to the conclusion that my friends (or at least, the subset who read my livejournal) are just too intelligent. Every time I post something which I think is profound, I expect to get replies along the lines of "Wow, that's really interesting!". Instead, I get replies that are more like "Mmm, okay, but have you thought of...?". So I clearly need to cultivate a new set of friends who are less bright :P :D

Mmm, okay, but have you thought of the fact that profound observations often shake loose a chain of additional thoughts that wouldn't have happened without them? :)

*snicker*

It's no bad thing. The problem stems solely from my own desire to be Recognised as Someone Who Sometimes Says Thought-Provoking Things. It's probably a geek socialisation issue - the fact that a person bothers to comment on my post means automatically that they thought it was interesting. Still, sometimes it leaves me feeling a bit unappreciated.

If what you were posting was "well, duh" to your friends, we wouldn't bother to respond to most of it. (If someone is looking for straightforward information, I'll provide it even if I'm surprised they don't already know it: and sometimes that surprise is followed by "right, s/he's not American/from New York/of my age cohort/Jewish/queer/female/...") I also suspect that in some cases your friends may be thinking that it's nice to now know three people, including themselves, who have thought of this thing, or even not wanting to say "hey, cool idea, I hadn't thought of that, but now that I've looked at it it reminds me of..."

Reminds me of the Blackadder quote "I like to have breakfast with a complete moron to remind me I'm best"

Maybe that's why people listen to Chris Moyals.

:o)

You think all those smart arses would read your journal if it wasn't interesting and intelligent?

(And all those comments mean you Provoked Thought)

Some of the stuff you write about get me thinking about things but nothing too indepth or provoking :).... I have this thinking that you're like an infinite amount smarter than I, H-L. :)

Right, so I should post when I actually think "wow, that's really interesting!" rather than just thinking I'm dumb and clueless and will be revealing my hideous lack of knowledge and profound thoughts?

You have one friend at least who appears to be becoming less bright by the second.

PS. I know you're not being altogether serious, and neither am I, but I've always thought that my comments of "wow" would be seen as spam-like so I have refrained. I can throw them in if you would find it affirming.
