There really are no swearwords strong enough for how I feel about Word 2007. It's a stupid piece of software which breaks all of the usability of, say, Word 97 - and the only reason I'm using it is that OpenOffice mucks up the formatting when it opens a .docx file.

Having spent about 10 minutes trying to resize a chart title so it is long and thin along the top of the plot rather than short and fat, taking up 2 lines, I've just found this in the help: The size of the title box adjusts to the size of the text. You cannot resize the title box.

I'm sorry, but whose IDIOTIC idea was that?

Our current accessibility advice is to downgrade to XP and 2003. It's unusable for VI people and indeed anyone else. Some funding bodies are agreeing to fund downgrades.

There is also an add on which allows you to get a 2003 style interface onto 2007 but I have no idea how good it is, it costs £30 I haven't yet invested into trying it.

I have decided when work "upgrades" I am going to use one of my 2003 install disks and replace it for my sanity. I may end up doing the same with my OS cos Vista is vile.

I'm not sure I have a choice as to what shite is installed on the computers at college. Remember, I said the only browser we have is Internet Exploder 6! I feel really sorry for anyone who only has internet access through college and so has to do secure transactions using software that I consider unsafe.

Interestingly, I've played with Word 2007 Mac edition and it has almost exactly the same UI as the older versions of Word on Windows. None of that "ribbon" crap, which is horrendous for the visually impaired or the easily distracted (my disability stuff means that unnecessary flashy graphics can stop me from getting useful work done). I assume that Apple put their foot (feet?) down and insisted that Microsoft fixed Word to work properly, or they wouldn't endorse it.

Depends if you have your own PC for PhD use or not... And whether you could argue it as a 'reasonable adjustment' which 'might' help :>

They've utterly broken the Graph function in Excel as well. Pointless, unnecessary, infuriating changes.

I feel your pain. Word 2007 is the only word processing program offered at my work, and I can't understand some of the changes it made from previous versions. In trying to make things more user friendly it simply made them more confusing/frustrating. I rather feel the same way about Power Point 2007 as well, but that's another story...

Quick!

Which Group Ribbon combination is correct for the "end it all now" button? Note that the ribbons are listed first, before the semi-colon and the groups are listed second, after the semi-colon.

A) Oh god, Whyy!?; Please, Please have Mercy!
B) Misc.; Group 8
C) Bathroom; Fixture group

In fact, imagine if the world were set up like that.

You launch House 2007 because you need to write a .shitx document (you have to poo).

You find the "plumbing" ribbon, go to the "bathroom fixtures" group. Click the "Waste Management" button to open the diolouge box. Find "Toilet" in the list. It sould be ninteenth from the bottom. Click "Use" button.

(This is how my mother's Word 2007 textbook reads. No really.)

Is this original? If so, I'm going to submit it to [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes, because it made me laugh so hard :D

Word 2008 for Mac is mostly reasonable, in my experience.
