What's wrong with this email?

Dear All,

It has come to my attention that the map sent earlier failed to send, so directions to this afternoon's wrap are as follows:

- Turn left out of the entrance to Birkbeck reception and walk down Torrington Square to Torrington Place.
- At Torrington Place, walk up towards Waterstones and cross to the other side of the road to Malet Place.
- Walk down Malet place about 100 metres and under the tunnel.
- On the other side of the tunnel, look behind you and you will see the steps up to the Medical Science building. Climb the steps and enter the building.
- In the foyer, take the stairs facing you up to the first floor, where the AV Hill Lecture Theatre is.

Where are the alternative directions for people who can't, or shouldn't, use stairs?

And yes, you freaking well know that I can't/shouldn't use stairs, because we had this conversation only very recently about the damned Symposium!

Mmhmm. In fact, you've picked almost exactly the same wording that I thought of. I can't decide which would work better - a 1 line email saying "Where are the alternative directions for people who can't, or shouldn't, use stairs?", or a long, stompy email going all DDA on them.

I shall ask for advice from Philip and/or the Disability Office on Monday. Really thinking that Certain Administrative staff here need an enforced lesson in disability matters. I mean, if I have to sit through an enforced lecture on plagiarism...

One day, someone will compare the enforced plagiarism lectures at various places and conclude that they are suspiciously similar :)

Perhaps the foyer has an elevator as well and he assumed people who can't/shouldn't use stairs will be smart enough to see it once there?

The steps to the medical science building don't sound too tough, but surely there is an alternate entrance.

I would phone up the people in the building and ask about handicap accessible routes to the lecture hall. You might do better getting through to them than the people running the event. Not that you haven't had this problem enough to have thought of that... (Well, obvious and past procedures slip my mind often...)

People are just frustrating and there's not much you can do.

Yup. Complete lack of disability awareness or concern for anyone who didn't want or couldn't manage a longish walk and steps to negotiate. ::hugs:: I know you will sort this out and in the process I just hope someone other than you learns something! ::more hugs:: I saw a Ludy this afternoon and it made me very happy. :-) (I made it to the Bi Coffee meeting)
