Found this on Tumblr today, and it's awesome: A Character-Building Question Meme.
I'm surprised how utterly easy it is to answer every single question for some of my characters, and how hard it is for others. Although I guess I shouldn't be: Martin actually Lives In My Head, Alix has been around for months, and Dariel's brand new.
If anyone's interested in my answers to any of the questions for any of my characters, feel free to do what that poster suggested and leave a comment with the question number/s and the character name.

10. What makes them feel safe or secure? What makes them feel insecure or unsafe?
Books. Books make him feel safe. An entire library makes him feel safer. His extended family are great hoarders of books and scrolls on all subjects: magic, history, religion... even pornography. When he was 15, he found his greatX5-uncle Alix's original manuscript for the book he wrote about the Oblivion Crisis and his part in it, and spent many happy nights under the covers with his right hand and thoughts of Alix and Martin.
As a powerful mage, the one thing that makes him feel insecure beyond his wildest nightmares is the thought of running out of magicka. He is careful to conserve it unless he is in the safe environment of the College, and always has extra potions of Restore Magicka tucked away while travelling.
Weapons make him feel unsafe. It's one thing to be with people who keep a sword or dagger strapped to their belt, quite another to be around heavily-armed people with weapons pointing at you. He prefers the use of speech and magic over physical fighting. He'll have a lot to learn once the expedition gets underway.
14. What are they like when they are drunk?
Much the same as he is sober, only without inhibitions, which is what scares him so much about drinking. His tolerance is one small glass of wine - beyond that, he becomes loud, chatty, and flirty. He flings his arms around guys he likes and tells them how much he likes them, and what exactly he'd like to do to them. That's a problem. Skyrim might be more open-minded than other parts of the Empire, and same-sex marriage might be legal, but that doesn't mean that drunken Nords take well to being chatted up by other men. Especially rather pretty Breton mages. Getting drunk among other mages is safer, since at least they won't turn round and exhibit wild anti-magic prejudice, but he's still afraid of drunken flirting with the wrong guy.
17. Do they have any pet peeves or petty dislikes, and how do they react to encountering them?
Stupid people. Dariel has a quick mind and is from an entire family of mages and scholars. He's used to being around people who think and reason. If people are simply uneducated, that's one thing - if they live in the middle of nowhere and/or have little money, they might not be able to afford education, so that's really not their fault. But he cannot stand people who don't use the brain that the Nine gave them. He doesn't react well - rather peevishly in fact, and might well snap at others who reply dogmatically or without thinking.
24. How do they react to being physically injured or undergoing medical treatment?
It depends on the reason for the injury and who is doing the treatment. If he has hurt himself through his own stupidity, e.g. a misfiring spell or other magical accident, he will be angry with himself. Of course, he has Restoration magic and also knows practical non-magical first aid, but it frustrates him to have to spend magicka on fixing his own mistakes. If it is some other type of injury or illness, how he reacts will depend on how well he is - whether he's able to think clearly. If he can reason, then he would want to control his own magicka flow and heal himself to the best of his ability. If his mind's clouded by pain or fever, he is grateful for any medical treatment he receives from others.
Do you want some for Onzer? How about 2, 9, 13, and 21?

Date: 2013-03-20 10:36 pm (UTC)2. What is their weapon of choice, and what weapon do they dislike using the most?
His fists. Yes, he's a mage. Yes, he's a relatively good one, but brawling was where he started. It's home. It gives him control and feedback, and it's easier to decide not to kill someone - Onzer likes options and with his fists he has them. Dislikes summoning a Dremora Lord: Onzer's only expert level conjuration spell - the Dremora clearly wants him dead and constantly tries to find a loophole in his orders.
9. As a child, what did they want to be when they grew up? Did they realize their dream?
Onzer always wanted to be wealthy. It hasn't happened. Another dream was to be an upstanding example of Khajiitness - jury's still out on that one, but he's reasonably happy with his progress.
13. What decision in their past did they most analyze and fret over after the fact?
Onzer accidentally tried to rob an off-duty guard back in Morrowind. It landed him in jail for the first time and he fretted a lot over it. Nothing is worse than having your parents visit you in jail. He took away an important moral lesson; don't get caught.
21. How well do they take criticism? How do they react to others noticing their flaws?
Depends who's doing the noticing. Onzer takes comments on his exams very seriously and addresses them diligently. More personal criticism usually rolls off his back; Onzer is who he is, and no amount of tearful 'you can be better than this' from the people he's robbing are going to move him. Advice from friends he usually cheerfully ignores.
