What do straight-edge or teetotal people do when they have a shit day? Today I really wanted to go and get drunk. Except there are several reasons why that would be a seriously bad idea.

I had a milkshake instead. But what other options are there for de-stressing that don't involve recreational drugs? Vegan milkshakes aren't that easy to come by, especially if I'm not near Camden and/or it's after 6 pm.

Eat chips, play computer games, or have sex (with or without someone else.)

I take it that chocolate counts as a recreational drug here?

Familiar music or books, maybe?

It's not so much that chocolate counts as a recreational drug as that it's a normal part of my diet. So eating chocolate because I'm stressed would involve eating more chocolate than I am comfortable eating, and simply make me feel sick rather than de-stressed.

Music. Music is a wonderful drug. I find that venting through writing tends to take the edge off too, even if only a bit.

Yeah, except I have lately been too exhausted to write about it :S Finally got round to it, though (http://baratron.livejournal.com/760210.html).

I normally do something Physical. Normally either rocking out round the house to some suitably rocking music or Practising marshal arts/wrestling (next house is going to have a downstairs room with a mat I can bump on). The important thing is that after a burst of energy I then stop and chill. I know the second option may not be totally suitable for you at times but the dancing option don't even require the ability to stand up.

Chocolate and other sweeties may count as recreational drugs - and coffee certainly does.

Bunny-snuggling
Knitting - ideally with particularly nice/sensorily-pleaseing yarns
Watching brain-candy telly (or similar media)
Reading something absorbing but not too demanding
Going to look at the sea (not really applicable to London-based people sorry)
Going and laying down in a darkened room - maybe with (safe) moderately heavy things on top of me.
Doddleing
Writing about the stuff and things

Play computer games. Take a book to the bath. Bake. Bitch/vent. Watch a film while stitching/knitting/crocheting. Sing (this is usually more of a day time thing due to not wanting to wake the baby).

If I'm angry, I'm all about the computer games. If I'm sad, music.

Playing computer games is my favourite distraction. Watching TV (brainless stuff or things I know really well to reduce spoon-usage) and reading a favourite book are others. When really ill I look at calming pictures and cuddle my penguins.

Eating chocolate always helps as well.
