Is anyone else in London suffering from excessively over-chlorinated tap water?

Methinks the Thames is full of sewage again :/

If you don't like the chlorine taste get yourself a pitcher (doesn't have to have a filter) and stick some tap water in the fridge. Most of the chlorine will disappate and the water will be tasty gorgeous, and chilled. :)

Why does that work? I know (anecdotally) that it does, but I want to know why in SCIENTIFIC TERMS, damnit!

I also want to know why it works because I can't drink water that's ice cold (it makes me choke), and I want to find some way to replicate the effect without either (a) having water that's too cold to drink or (b) having to take water from the tap & put it in a jug in the fridge for a couple of hours, then have to take the jug out of the fridge and have it sitting on the table for a couple more hours...

I was thinking just that as I was writing the comment. I'm not sure why exactly. I guess it is to do with the volitiliy of the chlorine compounds they use, so perhaps just leaving a jug on the side would work too...
