Random stuff I have been wondering from the Pokeschool forums... see message #15 where I start blethering about Pokemon DNA, mitosis, chromosome number and atomic structure. Argh!

Also, I would just like to say that polyploidy in plants is extremely freaky.

That web page doesn't even begin to cover it.

Sugarcane isn't 8n. Some of its chromosomes are 8n, others are 10n, 12n, and 14n. Also this depends on the cultivar (strain of sugarcane). I knew a bit about tetraploids and hexaploids when I read my first sugarcane genetics paper, but my head was hurting after one and a half pages.

The technical term for different copy numbers is "aneuploid".

Polyploidy is mighty weird, and I get very wibbly when people talk about using colchicine to induce it.

When I did A-level bio, they were working on doubling the ploidy of wheat to 12n from 6...
