Yes, they were playing Texas Hold 'Em. I don't think she knows which are good hands, although we did try to explain what was happening. It was quite exciting actually. I didn't understand poker either, until I shared a house with my brother, and ended up watching quite a lot of late night poker with him. We did try to explain what was going on, but that doesn't necessarily help.
Funny you should mention that - when Alexa's brother told us he'd become a poker player, I kept hearing it as PokePlayer ;)
I don't like card games with too many rules. I feel like I have trouble keeping them all in my head. Alexa tried to teach me Canasta some time ago and it did my head in. That's why I like Fluxx - it has a stupendously large number of rules but they're all on the table in front of you.

I downloaded a program called "Poker Superstars". It is a one hour demo but it teaches you the rules as you go.
It does help if you know how to compare two five card poker hands to know which will win.
