We finally booked our flights to Canada!
Richard & I will both be on the Air Transat flight that leaves London Gatwick at 11:45 on Thu 28th Jun and arrives at Toronto Pearson International airport at 14:55 the same day. Richard is flying back on Wed 4th Jul at 21:50, while I'm staying on a few more days and flying back on Sat 7th Jul at 23:50.
We are at a wedding in Hamilton and unavailable all day on Sat 30th June, and we may stay over that night in Hamilton. But other than that we'll be in Toronto doing touristy stuff and wanting to hang out with people there. I especially want Richard to meet
epi_lj, because I am convinced that they share a brain.
bcholmes?
the_siobhan?
futabachan?
okoshun?
clawfoot? Anyone else I didn't realise was in or near Toronto?
Does anyone have crash space we could borrow for a while? We can theoretically afford a hotel for most of the time, because our flights were so scarily cheap that I'm convinced the aircraft is going to fall apart mid-Atlantic (though the website has won brownie points from me for having vegan listed as a standard option for airline meal). But it can sometimes be nice to stay with online friends even when you don't *have* to.

Date: 2007-06-13 12:16 am (UTC)It's now looking like we might only be staying Thursday night in Toronto itself and be going to Hamilton on Friday, and not returning until Sunday. (Have to check what all the other #soc.biters plans are.) In that case, it would definitely be useful to have a sofa bed to stay on for the first night, because it's pointless checking into a hotel for one night. Then I guess we'll stay in a hotel in Hamilton on Friday & Saturday nights. We might end up in a hotel in Toronto from Sunday to Tuesday, but then I'll be wanting to stay with people where possible while I'm in Toronto by myself.
Is being there for Canada Day good or bad? I mean, is it the sort of holiday where all the shops and museums close and there's nothing to do except go to church and/or village fetes? Or does it just mean the city centre will be unusually busy on a weekday?

Date: 2007-06-27 10:04 pm (UTC)The place we've booked is the Toronto Travellers Home, 588 Dundas Street West (http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/canada/toronto/12906/) - it's on the same map as your place, but east a bit (on the corner of Dundas Street W and Augusta Ave). We would love to meet up with you for dinner on Thursday or Friday, if you're available.
I have made a new post here (http://baratron.livejournal.com/485639.html#cutid1) with a chart of what we're doing when. At the moment it's a whole lot of empty.

Date: 2007-06-12 07:28 pm (UTC)We have nothing on our schedules that I can see for that weekend!
Also to note: July 1st is Canada Day, and July 2nd, the Monday, is a holiday.

Date: 2007-06-13 12:30 am (UTC)I do have fairly effective allergy meds now, though, so I'm not too bothered about cats. It's dust mite that's the real problem. Blah.
I have a shiny new Rough Guide to Toronto because I figured my Rough Guide to Canada was completely out of date (bought it for alt.polycon 6, and I don't think it was that year's edition anyway). I will read it in my Copious Free Time *cough* and figure out what we want to do/see.

Date: 2007-06-27 10:23 pm (UTC)I think we could be convinced to go to the Royal Ontario Museum. I very much like that it's open until 9.30pm on Friday & all weekdays in July - that's an aspect of civilisation that's barely made it over here. (The only museums in London that have a late night at all are the V&A and the Tate Modern.) I wonder if that means we could tack it onto the end of a day in which we mostly did something else? Hmm.
Looking at the gallery plan, I expect we'd mostly want to look at the natural history. The Bat Cave and Reptiles galleries sound good. Shame the dinosaurs bit won't be open until winter :( I like dinosaurs!
The Art Gallery of Ontario isn't really appealing because of the construction work - none of the exhibitions listed particularly appeal to me, and I haven't heard of any of the artists really. It might be interesting when the construction work is finished and the permanent galleries are open again, but not right now.
I think I or we would like to stay with you at some point next week. I'll be around on my own from Wednesday night until Saturday afternoon, and I don't want to stay in a hostel by myself after having had Richard around. I don't know how long you'd consider it reasonable to have house guests for (I know you live in a flat).
