This is a very abbreviated list of eateries limited by:
a) proximity to where we're staying
b) proximity to somewhere we'll be going during the day
c) menu.
My mum doesn't like meat, so vegan restaurants with 101 seitan steaks and no dishes for people who like eating vegetables don't really appeal. Also, she can't eat mushrooms and doesn't much care for peppers or courgettes (zucchini), which is what many of the vegetable dishes seem to consist of (because they're New World vegetables?). And, much as I like good healthy veggie dishes, I have a strong fondness for "I can't believe it's vegan!"-style 'junk' food.

Restaurants & Cafes I really want to go to:
Babycakes - Vegan Bakery
248 Broome St, New York City, New York (10002) (at between Orchard St & Ludlow St, Lower East Side, Manhattan)
212-677-5047
Open Tuesday-Thursday: 10am–10pm

Babycakes get serious props from me for managing to provide the out-of-towner with all of the information they'd need to find the place, in the way of both a map and subway stops: F J M Z Delancey Street, B D Grand Street.

Red Bamboo
140 West 4th St, New York City, New York (10014) (at Washington Square and 6th Ave, West Village, Manhattan)
212-260-7049
Open Mon-Thur 12:30am-12am, Fri-Sun 12pm-12am.

I wouldn't say I really want to go to Betterburger, but I've been there every time I've been in New York (which is twice), and anything you do twice becomes a tradition. Plus, it is literally minutes from where we're staying. I suspect this will be for dinner after the flight tomorrow, before we go to find Whole Foods.
BetterBurger
561 Third Ave at 37th St
Monday-Saturday 11:00am-10:30pm

Other places we could go to:
Blossom - warning, site contains annoying audio
187 9th Ave, New York City, New York (10011) (at 21st St, Midtown, Manhattan)
212-627-1144
Dinner: Mon-Thurs 5pm-10pm.

also Cafe Blossom
466 Columbus Ave, New York City, New York (10024) (at between 82nd and 83rd, Natural Musuem station, Manhattan)
Open Mon-Fri 9-10:30

Candle Cafe
1307 3rd Ave, New York City, New York (10021) (at 75th St, Upper East Side, Manhattan)
212-472-0970
Open daily 11:30am-10:30pm

Curly's Vegetarian Lunch
328 East 14th St, New York City, New York (10003) (at between 1st & 2nd Ave, Manhattan)
212-598-9998
Open daily 11am-11pm.

Little Lad's Basket - Wall Street
120 Broadway, New York City, New York (10271) (at lower arcade, between Cedar & Pine St, Subway 4 & 5, West Village, Manhattan)
212-227-5744
Cash only. Mon-Fri 7am-5:30pm (stop serving at 3pm, take-out only after).

I hope to hear from [livejournal.com profile] redbird & [livejournal.com profile] rosefox (and anyone else who lives in NY that I missed) about meeting up.

What's the possible timing on this? The only one of those that's near my office is BetterBurger, and even that's an iffy definition of "near" for a person who has to fit things into an hour lunch break. How would you feel about that Chinese-and-Japanese place we met last time you were in town? [I doubt I can manage dinner this week, between energy levels and having already promised my mother one night.]

We can come to near your office for lunch on Wednesday, if you remind me where your office is. That's not a problem. (I'll be avoiding the subway until after I meet you ;) Actually, I'm much less likely to get lost now I've found that route finding website (http://www.brail.org/transit/nycall.html).) The plan for Wednesday is to get up and check email etc, wander around going "ooh, we're in New York" (which could well be walking over to find you), have lunch, then go to one of the art museums (I'm not sure which yet). So we'd probably like to get a fairly early lunch.

Unfortunately Chinese doesn't work because my mum doesn't eat anything more exotic than Italian. I was wondering if there was some sort of soup & sandwich place near you? I've definitely seen a soup & sandwich chain that has "vegetarian" and "non-dairy" as options for soups, and sometimes these even coincide :) I think it was Hale and Hearty (http://www.haleandhearty.com) that I saw? They seem to have many locations in Manhattan, and multiple soups that I can eat.

The shop I walked past was extremely tiny but there were a few seats - maybe it's possible to get them if you're early enough? Or maybe most people get the soups delivered to their offices.

I think Hale and Hearty mostly do takeaway, and I don't think there's one adequately handy to my office. On the other hand, there's a deli/salad bar sort of place near my office (well, probably a dozen such) that has little tables. I don't think the acoustics are great. Let me contemplate this. Is your mother also vegan? And does Indian food count as exotic in her book? (I'm trying to get a handle on options here.)

[I don't think of Chinese food as remotely exotic, but that's New York for you.]

She isn't vegan, but is fairly fussy and very allergic to fish.

(Personally, Chinese food tends to be my default setting, but my mum doesn't like rice or anything at all spicy. It's a bit annoying.)

Bah, this hotel internet terminal is EATING MY MONEY! $1 is supposed to last 2 minutes 30 seconds, but that seems to be no time at all. Or maybe I'm just far too used to free, unmetered internet :)

Today we are going to find a hardware store to find a screwdriver, and are then going to the Guggenheim Museum. I haven't heard back from you, so I'm assuming you may be too busy to meet up, or logistics aren't coming together. It would be great to see you even if only for coffee, but I understand that you're busy with your own mother's visit and that we all only have a limited number of spoons. Perhaps tomorrow?

I don't at the moment even have a good grasp on how much energy I'll have tomorrow. If you want to try this, my mobile is 646-721-4041, and I usually go to lunch a little before 1:00. There's a chain called COSI that's sort of Italian-influenced American food, sandwiches and salads and soup. They have a few vegan options, though I realize you may have eaten enough hummus for one lifetime, and it looks fine for someone who doesn't want spicy. If that suits, there's one near my office, though I can't predict seating. Another alternative is a deli/salad bar place, also near my office, with little tables inside (though I have only gotten my salads and sandwiches to take away); you can specify ingredients and have them toss you a salad, so vegan would be easy to manage.

Alternatively, a cup of tea or such in the early evening might work.
