The D word.

After quite literally years of fear and procrastination, I have booked an appointment at the fang doctor's. Monday 17th March at 12.45pm, which was the earliest day available when I thought I was likely to be better. (While the d-person is relatively unfussed by germs as the mouth's full of them anyway, it's not worth me going if I'm coughing or sore throaty and can't open my mouth wide enough). Now I just have to get myself there at the appointed time and not freak out (too much).

I would like to be congratulated.

(Of course, I'm now sitting here crying from stress, but that's a step up from complete avoidance.)

Well done. I too have the fear, though maybe not as bad as you; I have an appointment for the day afer yours. I hope I can get one sooner as front tooth has just collapsed in a heap and given up. Bah!

I have no specific reason to have dentist phobia - I've had almost entirely good experiences there. (The exception was the NHS orthodontist who wanted to take out EIGHT teeth, and we fixed that by going privately. In the end I had a horrible headgear brace at night for a year, but no teeth removed.) It's more that I have medical phobia in general, and it's manifesting across the whole range. I seem to be almost capable of going to the GP now though, which is a start.

Well done. I've been avoidant of that d person since 2000/2002 and keep finding 'reasons' why continuing to avoid is better than going to see one.

Ah yes, the "rationalisations". Those are often the biggest obstacle to overcoming the fears. Well, that and avoidance.

My grandfather, uncle, and cousin are dentists, so I don't have that phobia, but, for the same reason, I'm very supportive when people DO work through that phobia!

(The fact that my grandfather is both a dentist AND a clown may explain something about me. . . )

well done. I really ought to see one myself, I think it's been about 10 years. It's mostly been a lack of spoons, plus fear of being charged $BIG_MONEY in my case, but I did get as far as registering with a local one before my pre-christmas crash.
