So, who else sat up all night watching the US Election even though you're not even American? :D

I kinda want to go to bed now because I'm tired and have to get up in six hours, but I want to hear Obama's speech :)

I have to admit that McCain's speech conceding defeat had me in tears - it was a REALLY good speech. "This is an historic election and I recognise the special significance it has with African-Americans." I really like that he encouraged his supporters to now support & work with the new President. Also amused that he only got round to thanking Sarah Palin after 6 minutes. Seems like a rather long time to speak without mentioning one's running mate.

Now... is there any news from California about the evil Proposition 8? Yesterday (well, Monday now) Google Ads put a "Yes to Proposition 8" ad on lots of people's blogs & webcomics without their knowledge or consent, which rather circumvents their policy of "Don't be evil". Humph. Although they did issue an official statement about it, which helps somewhat.

There's a website here (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/ballot.measures/) that is tracking all the ballot initiatives as the results come in. There a gay marriage and abortion bills in quite a few states.

I admit to going to bed early last night (I like my sleep when I need to be up for 6 AM) but I listened to the election results on the radio this morning. Kudos to the US of A on their new president, but I don't like the sound of two of these props that were passed >>;

Yeah, I stayed up. It looks like Proposition 8, Proposition 102, Initiative 1, and Amendment 2 all passed, banning same-sex marriage in three states and disallowing same-sex couples from adopting in another. California is still counting, but it seems unlikely that that's not how it's going to turn out.

Damn it :( Not surprised about Arizona or Arkansas, and I didn't know about the Florida Amendment 2 until last night; but Proposition 8 is too ridiculously close for my liking. I don't suppose you know what these various things need to pass - simple majority (first past the post, even if it's one vote), or a clear consensus (x% of votes)?

Prop. 8 only needs 50%+1 of the voters.

(And, of course, to survive the challenges in court that will be immediately filed thereafter. There are some interesting questions to be resolved there....)

I didn't stay up all night because it was done and dusted by 6pm our time, but damned if I didn't almost burst into tears of joy on the bus home after getting a text from an American friend saying that McCain had conceded.
