Too much comment spam.

I have finally disabled anonymous comments. If anyone who doesn't have a livejournal wishes to contact me, then email to baratron at livejournal dot com works.

Although I'm not sure if this is enough, given that the latest scam is to set up a throwaway livejournal account to comment from. If I see that "I have a massive crush on you" spam message one more time, I will scream. There should be a way to disable further comments on old posts without also deleting the comments that are already there.

I hope that I won't have to switch to friends-only commenting, because that rather gets in the way of making new friends, but we'll see.

There is; I think it's a relatively recent addition that nobody noticed because it didn't tick off half of the userbase. Edit the entry, and change the "Allow Comments" setting to "Locked". (See the second bullet point under "Changing Comment Settings on this FAQ entry.)

There are certain old posts of mine that seem to be spam magnets. I've no idea why those posts get spam instead of newer ones, especially when they're from 2008 or even 2005. While it would be great to lock down the whole journal in one go (all posts older than 6 months, perhaps?), specifically locking those posts would be better than nothing.

15 times for me. Different usernames, but all from the same bloody IP address. You'd have thought simply blocking that would be a good place to start...

Actually, I wonder if I can block it myself?

I disabled anonymous comments about 2 months ago, and I only had 2 comments from throwaway accounts during that time. That was up until yesterday, when I got 4 copies of that spam comment in the same day. I deleted 3 of them (and blocked those accounts); the 4th account had already been suspended.

I'm still screening the comments from non-friends, so at least I'm the only person who has to see this stuff. I've also found (like you) that particular posts keep getting hit.

I've had no spam. I've got CAPTCHAs for non-friends and screen comments from non-friends before displaying them to others turned on.
Doesn't prevent non-friends commenting but it raises the bar for bots and spam.
