Are you sure that there weren't any lenses at all, or did you only see him from one side?
I had laser surgery on my eyes a while back, and they did one eye at a time. In between, that meant that one eye still needed glasses and the other eye didn't. I could have replaced the lens on one side with flat glass/plastic, but it didn't seem worthwhile just for a couple of weeks, so I removed that lens entirely. It probably looked a bit weird to other people, but it got the job done.
I actually thought of that and checked! No lenses at all!
I thought maybe he was someone who'd just switched to contacts and was feeling weird without the weight of the glasses on his face, but is that a thing that people do?
