I am having a horrible, no good, shitty day.

Woke up after 8 hours of sleep, but was still so tired that I almost put my phone & train ticket in the bin instead of my used paper cup.

Went to College. Dealt with a series of idiots. You see, I discovered at the end of last term that my Library account expired on 30th November. The Library's records claimed I was a "dormant student, not in contact with the College", which is interesting considering that I have completed Enrollment and paid fees!

It is sorted now, but only *after* some twat in Birkbeck admin managed to fuck things up worse than they already were. At one point, not only did the computer think I wasn't enrolled, but it also thought I owed money for the two terms last year when I was on a leave of absence! And it wanted me to produce £314 out of thin air!!

Stressed beyond belief. Funny, that. Was ready to kill someone, possibly myself. Not even joking. I don't know if it's "normal" to get so stressed by minor administrative cock-ups, but I have an anxiety disorder plus another disorder which makes my body produce too much adrenaline, and I just didn't bloody need some twonk trying to fix the problem and making everything worse! Nor accusing me of not enrolling on time! (How would the College have known where to take direct debits from if I hadn't enrolled?!)

Then I tried to go to Camden. Discovered the bus was on diversion because Upper Woburn Place is being dug up, but half the stops didn't have any explanation of the diverted route. Eventually found a 168 stop at bloody Holborn - so far south that I'd have been better off walking to Euston. The worst thing is, I even knew about this diversion. I'd just forgotten.

No, woman with a pushchair and no baby in sight, you DON'T get to make me feel guilty for being in the Priority Wheelchair Space. "That thing" is already as pushed over as it goes,
and I'm well within the blue lines. It's not my fault if your pushchair doesn't fold.

People who live in or know Boston well - is there a good app for figuring out public transport routes for Android? I can't get the official website route-o-matic to work on my phone. There doesn't seem to be a mobile version of the website like there is for Transport for London, and the Apps page quite honestly lists about 20 apps for various phone OSes, none of them officially endorsed by MBTA!

I need something that will work on the move since no amount of prior planning helps if something totally unexpected happens. It must also recognise and use the "accessible" flag, ideally on the front page like the official website's journey planner. (TfL's mobile edition hides this on a second page under "Advanced options" AND never remembers that I need it set. I get really sick of looking up routes and realising they won't work due to stairs, and having to go back and change the options).

I've booked my flights to arrive at lunchtime on Thursday 26th and fly out mid-afternoon on Sunday 29th - this is so I get home in time to sleep for a few hours, then get to College. I *may* be being wildly optimistic here, but less so than if I assumed I'd be able to sleep on the plane, since that rarely happens.

baratron: (what's this?)
Today featured way too much stress for my liking, but it improved as the day went on. Bus fiasco with a happy ending. )

I saw a clone of [livejournal.com profile] artremis in the Costa in the Waterstones near college. This was somewhat alarming as Ludys are known for their liking of both coffee and books, and I often go to Costa and/or Waterstones with the real Ludy. The clone-grrl was the same height as Ludy and had the same shape & size face, neck, breasts and hips! She also wore similar clothes (a Uniqlo top and cotton tomboy trousers with pull-tabs to tighten them over the hips). She had the same colour and style of hair, but it was flat rather than spiky, and had rectangular glasses, but hers had normal lenses rather than pink. Also her skin was a tone darker than Ludy's. Nonetheless, it was a really good resemblance and I couldn't help staring! If I'd had any photos of Ludy on my phone, I would have said "You look just like my girlfriend" and asked to take a photo of her in return; but as it was I couldn't prove that I wasn't a complete nutter trying to take photos of strangers to perve over. So I didn't say anything. She ordered a small cappuccino, which was just as well, as if it had been a medium Fairtrade vanilla latte I might just have died of shock!

Later this evening, Richard & I went for dinner with [livejournal.com profile] pir, who we have not seen in far too long. When my course is over, I need to spend the summer going round seeing all the friends I have here in London that I haven't had time to see in months or years! I have satiated both my desire-for-gadgets and concern-for-the-environment by buying the iPod he wasn't using, which is Reuse of existing electronics and therefore even better than Recycling. And now I will have music wherever I go without running down my stupid mobile phone battery. I will have to buy a new phone soon because the one I have just doesn't work properly, but I'll have to deal with the guilt about that later. No time for it now.

And, in case you care, I got 93% on my mass spec coursework, which is another A+ to add to my collection. I think I'm going to have to remember how much I rock, because I really am very stressed about these exams now.

I have been informed that "regular readers" of my journal need an update to my last entry to let them know what happened to Richard. Apparently at least one person was concerned that I might have killed him & buried him under the patio. Well, amazing though it might be, he did in fact make it to the cinema in time to see the 19:45 showing of Cars, as it didn't really start until 20:05. The film is fantastic - I always like Pixar films anyway, but I think this'll prove to be one of their best. We ate shitty nachos in the cinema followed by rather nice food at the sushi bar. And we've discussed his issue with not hearing important details like times of things, so hopefully it won't be a problem again.

Weekend has been quiet, which is good as I'm still very tired. Today I went into London to meet Tunaisafish (Jason) and Trubble (J) from the Sims forums. They both turned out to be real people and not sockpuppets, and neither of them were wearing socks on their hands to talk with. So this is good :)

Guess what? There's a double-decker bus stuck under the railway bridge by Norbiton station! Again. Unlike the last bus accident, which looked exciting but had no real story ("bus had fuel leak and its engine caught fire"), this one is not very exciting but has a story. Basically, there's engineering work on the lines which means no trains from Norbiton or Kingston, and they're running rail replacement buses to Surbiton instead. South West Trains, being cheap, want to order as few buses as possible, so rather than getting lots of single-decker buses they try to get in double-deckers. Except the bridge next to Norbiton station isn't quite high enough for a double-decker, by about 3 inches. It's still possible for a double-decker bus to use the station, but it needs to go a longer route round by Kingston Hospital, and of course, they always order in the buses from miles away, so the drivers aren't familiar with the local area. This being at least the third time that a bus has got stuck there in the 2 years we've lived here, I'm thinking they need to change the sign so it doesn't just say height 14' 3", but also says no double-decker buses. Bah.

Silly conversation about the bus incident from irc just now, quoted by permission. )

Boring background about bus routes. )

$random1: "All the buses to Kingston are being diverted. Apparently there's a huge fire outside Wickes."
h-l: "Oh great - I live near there."

Another random person chimed in:
$random2: "No, it's a bit further down than Wickes. It's outside the kebab shop by the railway bridge."
h-l: "Oh God - that's even closer to where I live!"

Got on the second 213 when it came, as contrary to $random1's idea only half the buses were being diverted (to try to make up lost time). I checked TFL's WAP site from my phone, and the very first entry was:
LONDON ROAD KINGSTON: Due to a traffic accident Routes 57 85 and 213 are unable to serve London Road between Kenley Road and Coombe Lane West.

This was extra-specially worrying, because TFL covers an enormous area, and normally the first page of realtime news is reserved for central London problems. For somewhere as far out as Kingston to be the very first entry, clearly something Very Bad was happening.

I will spare you the tale of woe about having to walk home with a sore leg, and give the exciting news. Yes, there is a burnt-out bus at the end of our road. It was entirely blocking up the London Road and causing many mile tailbacks in all directions. It's pretty disturbing - the engine at the back of the bus had overheated enough to melt some of the metal, the entire back end of the bus was covered in soot, many of the upstairs windows were smashed, and I could swear some of the roof looked ripped-off. Except it was just an ordinary London United 57, the same type of bus stock they always use on that route, which have been happily passing under that railway bridge for far longer than we've lived in this area. Sad admittance of the public-transport geek... )

I can't find anything about it on the internet, except on the Transport for London realtime travel news site, which just relays the same information I got from the WAP site. So it will remain a mystery until the local papers are published this time next week. Hrm.
